The Farmer produces the most necessary thing for us. That is our food. Nobody can survive without food. That’s why it’s said that “Farmer is the god.”

He grows different kinds of grains, yams, vegetables and fruits.

When at work, he wears a loincloth. The mammoty is a very important implement for him. With it, he digs the soil. Then he ploughs the field with a plough pulled by buffaloes. He works from morning till evening. He prepares the soil for cultivation with the sweat of his brow. Finally he sows the field with paddy that gives our staple food, rice.

From the time of sowing, till the time of harvesting, he looks after the field with love and care. He protects the crops from worms, insects, birds and big animals like cattle and wild boars. After about three or four months of dedicated work, he reaps the fruits of his labors.

Village damsels step into the field with sickles in their hands. With faces adorned with happy smiles, they cut and gather the golden paddy stalks. Then they carry them in bundles on their heads.

With the first part of their harvest, they cook milk-rice and kiriya. It is a food full of human kindness, generosity and gratitude. Then, they offer them to the gods and dieties who blessed them to make their effort a success. That function is called the “harvest feast”.

It is a good example that shows the farmer’s sincerity and gratitude. Therefore the farmer is an exemplary person as well as being an important person.

The following is a Chinese proverb that stresses the importance of the farmer.

“No nation can succeed, till it realizes that a greater credit could be achieved by digging a field rather than by writing a book”.
