When our English Teacher comes to the class in the morning, we all stand up and greet her saying “good morning, Teacher!” Then she smiles and says, “Good Morning” as a reply to our greeting and asks us to sit down.

She is a slender, fair and simple looking lady. Her cheeks dimple when she smiles. Her name is Miss/Mrs (Some Name).

She always speaks with us in English. She has also laid a rule on us that we must speak in English during the English Periods. Nobody broke that rule. All obeyed it to the letter and tried to speak with her and each other in English.

When we first spoke like that, we made so many mistakes. Then we felt shy and disappointed. On such occasions. Our English teacher sympathized and encouraged us saying “Never mind making mistakes. Don’t be shy. Go on.”

She taught us how to spell English words correctly. Once a week, she used to give us a spelling test. She dictated a passage from our English text book and we had to take it down correctly.

She always says that the proper pronunciation of words is very important. I can still remember the day she taught us that the “b” in the word “debt” is not pronounced.

She stresses that a good understanding of English grammar is very important in order to build up a good knowledge of English Language. She also says that the attempts of learning spoken English without having a fundamental knowledge of English grammar is a complete joke.

Now, once every two weeks, we hold a meeting of our English literary association. It was first initiated by our English teacher about a year ago.

All the office-bearers for the meeting are elected from the students of our class. A chairman for the coming meeting is elected at the end of every meeting.

I can still remember how I shivered with fear when our English teacher asked me to make a speech in the very first meeting of the English literary association. Not only me, no speaker could speak even a few words correctly. Even the newly elected chairman stammered with fear and excitement with a little smattering of the English language.

That was about one year back. But now, the situation is very much different. Our English teacher looks on proudly and happily as the students make very fertile speeches. The student-chairman introduces the speakers to the audience with a good fluency in English. Some girls and boys present themselves willingly for voluntary items and deliver fluent speeches.

Having watched our English meeting, our principal once said, “I was truly astonished by the quick improvement that your students have achieved during this short period of time.” and praised the attempts of our English teacher.

We are indebted to our beloved English teacher for having fed us with a good knowledge of English and opened the gateway to a treasury of knowledge.
