I was born on the 1st of April, 1988. Therefore my birthday falls on April the first, every year.
On that particular day, I get a lot of birthday wishes from my friends. At the same time, I become the target of a lot of jokes of my friends as it is the April Fool’s Day. Sometimes, I get a little annoyed too, when my friends say that I have been born with a pack of fools.

On the last April the first I celebrated my 12th birthday. It was a very happy day for me.
My mother had stitched a new frock for me. My father had brought a new pair of shoes for me. My elder sister made a beautiful and delicious cake by herself.

The Vegetable seller comes carrying a basket full of vegetables, on his head. His wrinkled forehead and the bulging veins of the neck soaked with sweat, show that the basket is too heavy for him. On his way for sales, he shouts “vegetables, Vegetables” Very Cheap…”

When somebody stops him, he lifts his basket with great effort and places it on the ground. Then he takes a sigh of relief and shoots a cajoling look at the person.

I am a boy of eleven years. My name is (Some Name). I have an elder sister and a younger brother. Both my father and mother are daily-wage-earners. My Father works in building sites. My mother works in a nearby tea factory.

We all live in a beautiful stretch of countryside called (some name). Our small house is a cadjan thatched one situated on a small hillock. It is surrounded by slopes of tea cultivations and stretches of paddy fields. Hence, every morning, our house gets immersed in a shawl of mist.

The temple is a religious centre of the Buddhists. It is situated in a beautiful and serene environment. Buddhist monks with shaven heads and wearing saffron robes live in it.

In addition to the temple buildings in which the monks live, there are also a dagaba, a shrine-room and a Bo-tree in the temple premises. The temple compound sprinkled with yellow sea-sand and well swept, looks clean and neat.

The Bo-tree stands erect grandly as a guardian-god. It’s huge foliage offers a welcome shade to a major part of the temple compound. It’s young leaves of pale golden colour emit a rustling sound swaying in the breeze.
The pinnacle on the top of the dagaba glitters amidst the rays of the sun.

The cow is a common domestic animal. She eats only grass and parts of plants. Therefore the cow is a herbivorous animal. Furthermore, she belongs to the class of animals called “mammals”.

It is interesting to see how the calf sucks her udder bulging with milk.

The cow gives us milk. When her udder is gently and methodically squeezed, a jet of milk is emitted with a hissing sound. Although the cow is milked twice a day, our villagers are always generous enough to leave sufficient milk in reserve for the calf.

As the month of April approaches, we all begin to feel the beauty and the festivity of the Sinhala New year season.

Perched on a branch of a tree, “Koha” sings away happily. Erabadu trees look as though they have been wrapped with red carpets. Torrential rains clean the surroundings. Farmers are very happy because their granaries are filled with grains. Trees are burdened with ripe fruits. The shrieks of the birds around them are very pleasant to the ear.

The Soldier is a member of an army. He wears a uniform covered with green and brown marks. He does so, to disguise himself as part of his surroundings. When in the battle field, he camouflages himself with leaves and branches of trees. He wears a helmet to protect his head from injuries. His touch boots cover his legs below the knees. He has a rifle in his hand. He is strong, brave and active. His duty is to protect our motherland from enemies.

The Farmer produces the most necessary thing for us. That is our food. Nobody can survive without food. That’s why it’s said that “Farmer is the god.”

He grows different kinds of grains, yams, vegetables and fruits.

When at work, he wears a loincloth. The mammoty is a very important implement for him. With it, he digs the soil. Then he ploughs the field with a plough pulled by buffaloes. He works from morning till evening. He prepares the soil for cultivation with the sweat of his brow. Finally he sows the field with paddy that gives our staple food, rice.

When our English Teacher comes to the class in the morning, we all stand up and greet her saying “good morning, Teacher!” Then she smiles and says, “Good Morning” as a reply to our greeting and asks us to sit down.

She is a slender, fair and simple looking lady. Her cheeks dimple when she smiles. Her name is Miss/Mrs (Some Name).

She always speaks with us in English. She has also laid a rule on us that we must speak in English during the English Periods. Nobody broke that rule. All obeyed it to the letter and tried to speak with her and each other in English.
